Spikes and Hidden Hangers
There are two very common brackets you will see on your typical open gutter system. Builder grade gutters use spikes or thin brackets(known as hidden hangers) that secure the gutter to the fascia. While a cheap hanging solution, they are not permanent by any means.
Over time, with weathering and age, the spikes and hidden hangers can begin to release. This is how gutters pull away from the home. Below, you can see the spikes are coming loose from the fascia, bringing the gutter with them.
Other Bracket Options
There are plenty of brackets on the market for various gutter guard systems, but which is truly the best? Some all in one systems, the bracket doesn’t have room during installation to support the lip. The problem here, is the gutter- over time- will weaken and sag at the “lip” of the gutter, causing a “smiling” effect. This is obviously not ideal for anyone cognizant of aesthetics.
Another bracket option out there for a covered gutter system supports the lip, but only screws into the fascia in one place. This creates a weak point where the screw can begin to back out of the fascia. Again, the issue with pulling away. So you see, brackets play quite an important part in gutter installation!
